Ilitha
Care Centre is an example of a care centre involved in its own local
community. The Centre was founded in 1995 in a township called Walmer
Dunes, in the Nelson Mandela Metrapole, South Africa (S33 °
55.538 E25° 36.096). The Walmer Dunes Township is situated on
the outskirts of the city of Port Elizabeth's next to the main airport
hub. This township is home to thousands of poor and underprivileged
people with a low employment rate.
The
Ilitha Care Centre was developed to help relieve the effects of
poverty and provide support within this local community by providing
child care and food distribution. The Centre todate provides support
for over 20 children, aged 3 to 5 years old. Many of these children
in the Centre are from homes where adequate nutrition and education
is inadequate. IIitha Care is dependent on donations from local
business and churches, as most of the children's parents cannot
afford to financially support the Centre.
